The Oil-Rich Sultanate on Borneo
Brunei is one of the richest countries per capita in Asia — an absolute Islamic monarchy on the island of Borneo surrounded by Malaysian territory. The country has been ruled by the Bolkiah family for over 600 years, currently under Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah (since 1967, making him among the world’s longest-reigning monarchs).
Brunei’s wealth comes entirely from oil and gas — the Sultan is one of the world’s wealthiest individuals (estimated net worth in the tens of billions), famous for his collection of over 7,000 luxury cars. The country applies sharia-based criminal law (expanded in 2019, drawing international criticism for punishments including stoning for same-sex relations, though these have not been implemented in practice).
