Central America’s English-Speaking Outlier
Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America — a legacy of its British colonial history as British Honduras (1862-1973, renamed Belize 1973, independence 1981). The country is culturally and politically more Caribbean than Central American — it is a member of CARICOM, plays cricket, and its population is distinctly mixed (Creole of African descent, Mestizo, Maya, Garifuna, Mennonite, and more).
The country hosts the Belize Barrier Reef — the world’s 2nd-largest barrier reef after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (about 300 km long). At its heart lies the Great Blue Hole — a 300 m wide, 125 m deep submarine sinkhole made famous by Jacques Cousteau (who named it among the world’s top 10 dive sites in 1971) and now featured on many divers’ bucket lists.
Belize is also a significant Maya archaeological region — Caracol (the largest Maya site in Belize), Xunantunich, and Lamanai were all major Maya cities. Mainland Belize remains ~60% forested, hosting jaguars, tapirs, scarlet macaws, and ocellated turkeys.
Guatemala claims all or part of Belize — a territorial dispute dating to the colonial period. A 2019 Guatemalan referendum voted to take the claim to the International Court of Justice, where the case is pending.
