Africa’s Oldest Republic — Founded by Freed American Slaves

Liberia is a country founded in 1822 by freed American slaves returned to Africa by the American Colonization Society, and proclaimed independence in 1847 — making it Africa’s oldest republic. Unlike virtually every other African country, Liberia was never colonised — though the Americo-Liberian settler elite (descendants of the returnees) dominated a native majority for over a century.

The country’s flag (a modified US flag), its capital (Monrovia, named after US President James Monroe), its constitution (based on the US Constitution), and much of its institutional structure reflect its American origins. Liberians use the US dollar alongside the Liberian dollar, and the country has the world’s 2nd-largest ship registry (a “flag of convenience”) — about 12% of the global merchant fleet.

Liberia endured two civil wars (1989-1996 and 1999-2003), which killed approximately 250,000 people and featured atrocities by warlords Charles Taylor (later convicted of war crimes at the ICC-linked Special Court for Sierra Leone), Prince Johnson, and others. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf — Africa’s first elected female president (2006-2018) — won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for her post-war reconstruction work.
