The Pacific’s Most Visited Island Nation
Fiji — an archipelago of 333 islands (110 inhabited) in the South Pacific — is the most visited and tourism-developed of the Pacific Island nations, with approximately 900,000 visitors a year (roughly matching the country’s own population). The country serves as the regional hub of the Pacific — headquarters of the Pacific Islands Forum, the University of the South Pacific’s main campus, and the regional aviation hub.
Fiji’s population is ethnically bifurcated: about 56% Indigenous Fijian (Melanesian-Polynesian) and 38% Indo-Fijian (descendants of 19th-century indentured labourers from India) — an unusual demographic for the Pacific. Ethnic tensions between the two communities drove four military coups (1987 x2, 2000, 2006) which have targeted Indo-Fijian political power; significant Indo-Fijian emigration has followed each coup.
Rugby is the national passion — Fiji is the reigning Olympic rugby sevens champion (2016 gold, 2020 gold, 2024 silver). The country of 930,000 routinely beats rugby superpowers at sevens and has been a semi-finalist at the 15-a-side Rugby World Cup.
The main island Viti Levu hosts most infrastructure; the Yasawa and Mamanuca island chains off the western coast host most resort tourism (Mamanuca was the filming location for Cast Away, 2000). The Lau group and Taveuni are less-visited alternatives.
