Africa’s Last Absolute Monarchy
Eswatini — renamed from Swaziland in 2018 by royal decree — is Africa’s last absolute monarchy. King Mswati III (reigning since 1986, aged 57 in 2026) rules with near-unchecked executive power. Political parties have been effectively banned since 1973. Parliament is elected but can only advise the king, who appoints the prime minister, the cabinet, judges, and senators.
The king is famous for his annual Reed Dance (Umhlanga) — where tens of thousands of unmarried young women dance bare-breasted before the royal family, traditionally one of the ceremonies through which the king may choose a new wife. Mswati III has 14+ wives (a practice called imbali — the “flower” wives).
The country has faced pro-democracy protests — particularly intense in 2021 (80+ killed in the crackdown) — but has not fundamentally reformed. The king’s lavish lifestyle (private jet, dozens of BMWs) contrasts sharply with one of the world’s highest HIV prevalence rates (~27% of adults aged 15-49, the world’s highest).
Despite the political issues, Eswatini is small, safe, and scenic — the Ezulwini Valley (“Valley of Heaven”), Hlane and Mlilwane game reserves, and craft markets make it an easy stopover between Johannesburg and Mozambique.
